Fishmarket in Urayasu 1.0
Type: School Graduation Project
Year: 2021
Description: The study addresses the problem of contemporary mega-city urban expansion and the difficult balancing act of managing urban growth and sustainable development. It explores the challenge within the expanding coastal area of Urayasu, Tokyo, emphasizing sustainability as a cultural framework and integrating local identity into the design process.
The proposed intervention is a fish market that honors the area’s fishing heritage while addressing modern needs. The design draws on the traditional Asian commercial street model, reinterpreting it with flexibility and versatility, key traits of Japanese architecture. The project succeeds in finding a unified and integrated solution that orders the whole from the structural principle to the smallest detail, demonstrating the architect's ability to thoughtfully engage with an unfamiliar context.
